I've been here in Lubbock Texas for 9 weeks now! I have only 3 more weeks to go until my training is done!
I'm definitely in the Bible Belt! Here in the small town of Lubbock alone there are 289 churches.
Everyone here thinks we are homeless. Multiple times people ask where we stay. One woman thought we slept on cots in the church. Another asked if we wanted to crash on her couch for the night. Ha.
It's extremely windy and dry here. They have what they call brown-outs. It's where all the dust from the cotton fields get picked up into the air and makes the sky brown. You can't even see 5 feet in front of you, and the worse part is you come inside covered in dirt.
Their favorite words here are ya'll and fixin'. Everyone calls you ma'am, which I'm not used to. The kids are taught in school to call their teachers ma'am and they also must recite a Bible pledge as well as the pledge of allegiance...pretty crazy.
I'm beginning to feel more like a missionary. You know you're a missionary when..
You know what BOM, PMG, and WOW stand for.
It begins to be entertaining critiquing doors and door wreaths,
You know your mailman on a first name basis and he's your new best friend.
You knock on someone's door you've met and say, "Hey, we were just in the neighborhood!" when you planned to drive 5 miles to see them.
The work is hard, but I'm having lots of fun and learning so much! I'm so grateful for this gospel and the blessings it brings!
